More Tire Clearance without Sacrificing Protection

A larger tire needs clearance inside the wheel well, especially as the suspension compresses. Pulling out the factory liner opens up space, but it also leaves the electrical components behind it exposed to damage. We designed our JL/JLU rear liners to address both sides of that problem: more wheel-well clearance for larger tires while keeping as much component coverage as possible.

The shape of the liner does the work here. We form the aluminum around the rear wheel well in multiple steps, with separate closeout panels at each end that cover all electrical components and add rigidity to the liner. The goal wasn’t just to replace plastic with aluminum. It was to gain as much clearance as possible without cutting the sheet metal, while protecting the critical components behind the liner. That balance is what drove the shape, not just how the liner would look behind the tire.

A remote shock reservoir needs a mounting location. So do rock lights tucked into the wheel well. Those details are easy to overlook when choosing a liner, right up until you’re standing next to the Jeep with a reservoir hanging from a shock and nowhere to mount it.

That’s part of why we use .090-inch 5052-H32 aluminum for our liners. The thicker material gives you a mounting surface for reservoirs and lights, rather than a panel whose only job is to cover the wheel well. It lets the liner play a useful part in laying out the rest of your setup.

The location still needs to suit your accessories and the space available on your Jeep; these aren’t pre-drilled, universal accessory mounts. We provide the material to work with, leaving you to choose the placement that makes sense for your build.

Once the factory plastic is gone, you can see a lot more of what’s inside the wheel well. How the liner goes together becomes part of how the finished Jeep looks and how much clearance the liner provides. We form the aluminum and TIG-weld the main body sections instead of bolting together little pieces. This gives our liners a seamless finish and increased protection while decreasing the chance of rattles from loose hardware.

That doesn’t mean every piece is welded into one assembly. The closeout panels and mounting brackets remain separate and go on during installation. The distinction is simple: the joints that form the main liner body are welded; the pieces used to mount it and complete the surrounding coverage are installed separately to help make installation easier and reinforce the assembly.

Whether you choose bare aluminum or one of the powder-coat options, the construction stays the same. You’re installing an already formed and welded liner body, not assembling a puzzle.

These are the standard rear inner liners for 2018–Current Wrangler JL two-door and JLU four-door models. Highline and coilover builds use separate liner families—see the fitment question below before ordering for one of those setups.

No—these go inside the rear wheel wells. They replace the factory plastic inner liners, not the exterior fender flares. Flares are sold separately.

Both rear liner assemblies, front and rear closeout panels, two mounting brackets and hardware kit 146700-01 are included.

Yes. You'll remove the factory inner liners completely and leave the flares in place. The underside of the factory flares will be exposed. Our installation doesn't cover trimming and reusing sections of the original liners.

No. You'll remove the factory liners, drill and deburr mounting holes, install nutserts and mount the liners and closeouts. The main bodies arrive formed and welded. Allow about 3.5 hours; we rate the job 3/5. Depending on your build and the access you have to the wheel well, you may need to remove the rear tires or lift the Jeep slightly.

Yes, with a 1/4-20 mandrel. You'll also need a W drill bit, a drill with a 9/32-inch bit, deburring equipment and hand tools. The installation guide has the full list. We offer the Cornwell Nutsert Tool Kit and W Drill Bit separately if you need them.

The liners are designed to add wheel-well clearance for larger tires while maintaining component coverage. There isn't one tire-size answer for every Jeep: wheel offset, suspension travel, bump stops and flare choice also affect clearance.

146700 is bare aluminum. 146701 is semi-gloss black powder coat, Cardinal BK-08. 146702 is textured black powder coat, Cardinal BK-59. If you're matching existing parts, those are the finish codes to check.

No. The rear backer plates are optional and sold separately. Most people purchase them bare and then finish them in their color or material of choice.

Those have separate applications: we do not make a one-size-fits-all solution. We build per motor and suspension system, which is why you see liners for 392 and diesel along with coilover-specific options.
